Lay Leadership

Terry Wheeler, Board President

Terry is a retired attorney, who specialized in legal issues in the management of new drug clinical trials from patient recruitment to FDA submission. She is married to Norton “Norty” Wheeler. They are the parents of Inga, Travis, Tanya (z’l), and Paul (z’l) and grandparents of Elliot, Allison, Drew, Sam and Ashley. She and her husband joined BZ as part-time members in 2012 when they began spending summers in Chattanooga. They became full members in 2015. Terry and Norty are regulars at Shabbat and holiday services. Terry loves to read Torah and chant Haftarah, as well as leading various parts of the service. Her favorite parashah is Nitzavim, and her favorite Haftarah is Chaye Sarah. When she leads Musaf, she likes to surprise the congregation with new melodies for Adon Olam. Terry has been active on the BZ Board since she joined the synagogue. She became President in 2022. She sees her greatest challenge as leading BZ through its move to a new, permanent home.

Lester Votava, of blessed memory
Lester was our valued Office and Operations Volunteer since 2003! He could always be found hard at work in the office every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, usually arriving even before the paid staff. Lester coordinated much of the routine building needs, prepared Shabbat service sheets, organized yahrzeit plaque lightings, organized and led the yellow candle shipping, and anything else that he could do to help. We will greatly miss our friend and helper.
